How Super is the Super Cleanse?

Super Cleanse Book Cover

Why would anyone that loves to eat undertake a cleanse? The reasons are legion and include, simply to see if I could do it. I militantly followed the Urban Revitalizer Cleanse found in Adina Niemerow’s book Super Cleanse. The results? Amazing.

No dairy, no grains or starches, no caffeine, no alcohol - just vegetables, raw vegetables mulched into unrecognizable forms. The first two days were rough - headaches, periodic hunger, drowsiness, crabbiness. On the third day, I turned a corner. I woke feeling energized and happy. The dark circles under my eyes were nearly gone too. By the fifth day I was ready for food with more substance and flavor. I missed cooking multi-course dinners with a glass of wine in hand.

It’s not easy to drink alien green juices and eat soups the consistency of baby food for five days, but it also wasn’t as hard as I expected. I was seldom hungry. And I didn’t feel deprived. Eating raw foods has changed the way I look at what I feed my body, but I’m not interested in an ongoing raw food diet - I love cooking too much. I would, however, consider another cleanse in the future - maybe make it an annual event.
